Red Wing design and produce premium American footwear focusing on quality, craftsmanship, durability and comfort. The boots are hand crafted and purpose built for work using stiff leathers and triple waxed stitching for extra strength.

Established in 1857 Red Wing are famously tough but comfortable and are the staple footwear of American workers, including Lumber jacks, railroad engineers, ranchers and farmers. Their footwear is renowned for their hard wearing quality and unique leather types produced by their own tannery situated on the banks of the Mississippi which is a stone’s throw from where the boots are produced in Minnesota. The factory produces roughly 5000 pairs a day and some craftsmen are the 4th generation of their family to work there.

It takes over 230 steps to hand craft each pair of Red Wing boots, but the premium quality means that they are built to last a lifetime.

How do Red Wing boots fit?

— Red Wing Styles fit true to size, if anything they come up a little short and narrow. Our experience in store tells us that Red Wing footwear is so tough that the styles do take a while to break in but preserve and they are well worth the effort.

What is oiled leather?

— Oiled leather has an added process in the tanning process, it is treated with oil to become water resistant and to repel liquids and chemicals making it a great choice of leather finish for work boots.

How should I clean oiled leather?

— We would recommend waxed leather spray, firstly you should remove the surface dirt with a stiff brush and then spray the boots thoroughly. Be sure to allow the boots to dry naturally in a cool environment, if you try to speed up the process the oily finish to the leather can dry out.
If you have noticed that this has happened to your Red Wing oiled leather boots you could use mink oil as instructed to rejuvenate the oily finish.

What is roughout leather?

— This has a fluffy texture, Red Wing use the alternate side of leather to what is traditionally used. Roughout leather is extremely durable and functional

How should I look after roughout leather?

— Red Wing boots are a real investment, by proper cleaning you will protect your investment by preserving the finish and prolonging the life of your footwear. To clean roughout leather we would recommend-

Remove the top layer of dust and dirt with a suede rubber brush, then liberally spray with Dasco Protector spray

What is featherstone leather?

— Featherstone leather is softer than usual types of leather used to produce footwear. It is scratch resistant and although thick is soft and flexible.

How should I look after featherstone leather?

— To look after your Red Wing Featherstone leather style we would suggest-
Rub the boot down with a stiff bristle brush, this will remove the top layer of dust and dirt. you should then rub down the boot with a clean damp cloth and then polish the boot with leather conditioner. Before it has dried buff the boot to create a high shine finish.

Red Wing Classic 875 has a crepe sole what is this?

— A crepe sole is a traditional shoe manufacturing technique. Crepe is a crude form of natural rubber that looks like crumpled lace. It is passed through heavy rolls to create the finished product that you would find used in shoe sole production.

What is S.B Tanning Company?

— S.B Tanning started as a small scale tannery specializing in unique leather finishes in Minnesota. Due to the sheer quality of the leather produced there it quickly grew and in 1986 it was bought by Red Wing. The tannery still follows the same techniques used 100 years ago when it first opened. Red Wing consider owning their own tannery a huge advantage as they have control over quality and know they are producing the best quality leather possible. The tannery produces thick, sturdy and high quality leather which are essential to maintaining Red Wings enviable reputation.

What is Oro Russett leather?

— This is a famous Irish leather, it is a deep reddish brown colour which is tanned with sequoia bark sap. The leather is made by Red Wing’s own tannery and has a glossy and healthy finish.

What traditional machinery do they use at The Red Wing Factory?

— Red Wing try to maintain traditional techniques to produce premium, high quality pieces. A good example of this is when they decided to upgrade their tumble mill. This is an essential piece of machinery with a rotating drum where tanning liquids, dyes and oils are fed to the leather hides. The management at Red Wing were unhappy with the finish of leather produced by the new metal drum and so reverted to using the pine wooden drum which has been in use since the company was founded.

— The Red Wing Factory is found on the banks of the Mississippi in Minnesota, America.

What is a moccasin?

— Red Wing have used the moccasin construction since their earliest designs. Moccasin comes from the Algonquian word for shoe. It has a U shaped stitched construction which is very comfortable to wear.
